Perfect place for our vacation

Eagle Head Cabins on the Kenai River was the perfect place for our vacation in July!  We could not have asked for a better destination.

Our cabins were about 50’ from the private fishing dock and fish cleaning station overlooking the cool waters of the Kenai River where my husband and son landed a 10 pound salmon!  Jerry Johnson, the owner, came out to teach us how to clean and fillet it and told us a Salmon seasoning would be in our kitchen cupboard, which proved to be delicious! We used the grill in the community pavilion just outside our cabins to grill the salmon that night (talk about fresh salmon!) followed by s’mores on the campfire.

Jerry is organized. When we arrived, he met with us to go over things on the website making sure we knew about the cabins and grounds, in addition to all of our fishing expeditions for the week. Top of the line waders, rain coats and fishing equipment were provided for use during our stay.

The mountains, river, and beautiful large chain-saw carved wooden eagles and benches made for great photo opportunities for our family at the cabins. The cabins were very clean and comfortable with all the necessities. It was a peaceful place to relax after a day of fishing. Jerry cares so much about his guests and the property! He was always very friendly and eager to
share stories with us. He seemed like family to our family of 4. The grass is mowed regularly to curb the mosquitoes. We’ve heard how big they can be in Alaska, however, we didn’t have any problems.

We enjoyed a lot of restaurants in the area around Sterling and all were delicious. Eating out is a little more expensive than Iowa, though. 🙂

Eagle Head Cabins partner with Russell Fishing, a family owned fishing guide service who know how to do it right!  Every guide was very knowledgeable and made sure we enjoyed our day.

Each day we fished at a different location with a guide who specialized in that type of fishing. We had two salt water trips near Homer where we were successful fishing for Halibut, but also caught some other very interesting fish. One day we learned to use a floss fishing technique on the Kasilof River and caught our sockeye salmon limit. Trolling for King Salmon on the Kenai
River was a relaxing catch and release day.

A Fly-In to Big River Lake where we caught our 3 sockeye per person limit in 20 minutes was definitely a highlight of our trip. While there we were able to have an up-close view of many eagles and even bears. Moose were not seen at that location but we saw several on our drive around the Sterling area.

We had such an incredible vacation in Alaska filled with so many amazing memories!  We
highly recommend Eagle Head Cabins and Russell Fishing guides. We will definitely be back!!
